Is an Online Degree Valid for Government Jobs?
Yes — with one condition. Regulation 22 of the UGC ODL & Online Programmes Regulations, 2020 treats online and distance degrees as equivalent to conventional-mode degrees. The condition: the university must have been entitled for that programme, that mode, that session.
Equivalence attaches to the record, not to the university's reputation. It does not override an individual employer's own eligibility conditions, so check the notification for the post you are targeting.
- Reg. 22, UGC ODL & Online Regulations 2020 — the equivalence provision
- UGC Public Notice F. No. 3-5/2022 (DEB-III) — attach this to an employer query
- UGC Notice F. No. L-9/2018 (DEB-II) — covers promotion, employment and higher study
Not allowed online: engineering, medical, pharmacy, nursing, dental, physiotherapy, architecture, agriculture, law, hotel management, visual arts, M.Phil and Ph.D. If anyone sells you one of these as an online degree, walk away.
